How to watch "Us" the movie
Jordan Peele went from one spectrum of
entertainment to the other: from comedy to horror/thriller movies. He decided to
surprise the world with an “instant classic” called “Get Out” that was
universally loved and made the expectations for all other movies by him to have
a crazy high bar of quality and thematic complexity. So, I went to watch his
next movie called “Us” with that public criticism in mind and personally trying
to see it from a neutral point of view.
I loved this movie for a completely different
reason than why I loved “Get Out”. I believe they close to equal in quality
even when they are nothing alike, if I HAD to choose one over the other I would
choose “Get Out” but that means nothing against “Us”. And here are the reasons
why this movie was amazing and why you should watch it with an open mind:
- Acting from a whole other level! Lupita Nyong’o, Shahadi Wright Joseph, Winston Duke and Evan Alex act like you have not seen in a loooong time (in that order from most amazing to normal amazing).
- The plot of the movie is COMPLETELY UNPREDICTIBLE; there is NO WAY you can say this is a movie that “you have seen before”. Thematically and story-wise, this movie takes twists and turns that NO trailer even hinted about.
- The Ending makes you think and want to talk to people about what in the world just happened, what the meaning behind it is, and what could this mean for the family and the world that they live in eventually.
Those three reasons are interconnected and
empower the other to make this movie more and more incredible in every way
possible. The fact that Jordan Peele decided that this was his second movie in
the horror/thriller genre says a lot about him not being the kind of director
that “follows a formula”. He made sure the audience and the main characters
where equally ignorant and confused about the situation around them for at
least 95% of the movie. And that decision in turn created empathy between the
characters and the audience. We were scared because they were scared. We were
confused because they were confused. We had no other option but remain focused
to try to see if we could piece the situation together before or at the same
time as the main characters do.
I urge you, without spoiling anything from the
movie, to go and watch this movie. Be focused, be open-minded and expect the
unexpected. Jordan Peele has so many hidden meanings behind his plot and his
characters, his imagery is amazing and the use of symbolism is second to none. However,
none of that matters unless you sit down with a cup of coffee and talk this
movie out after you watch it. At least I know that was my experience, the more
you think about this movie the more “secrets” you seem to unravel and find
hiding in plain sight.
